UPDATE My Lorenz Manifold Crochet Project

Ok, here's an update on my Lorenz Manifold crochet project. A very interesting one indeed. I'm hoping after spending all this time on this pattern, that I can figure out how to create the manifold properly. I finished 23 rows of tr and double crochet and then had to tear out 2 rows because I somehow lost 4 stitches. So I'm back to row 21. It's definitely easier if you use markers at least at every 25 stitches. Right now, row 21 is to have 343 stitches around and measures 12. 1/4" at the diameter. You can see it's starting to ripple from the increases. And you can also see, I'm still not doing well with ending and starting a new color.

A very fun project that thrills me everytime I pick it up. Just to see it's ripples changing really is exciting to me. Any comments?

My CROCHET Lorenz Manifold Project

I started out having trouble but then realized the trouble I was having was not reading the web site properly. The pattern was supposed to be there but I kept stopping at page 10 and found the pattern incomplete. It really wasn't a pattern at att. Then I figured out that since so many people had or could read the pattern and complete the project, that I was missing something. I sure was!! The complete pattern was on page 22! So I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out just what I was going to do by visiting patterns on Ravelry. Think that's where I finally figured out where to find it. At any rate, here's what I've done so far. I've just started round 10 as you can see.

I thought I knew how to finish and end a row when changing colors when crocheting but as you can see, there's a little jog which is driving me crazy so I'm going to have to figure that out and make that better. I've been completing the last stitch when there's two loops on the hook with the new color and think that's correct but I'm doing something else wrong and need to figure it out. I'm not giving up! That's my nature. AND maybe there is no better way.

If you're not familiar with the Lorenz manifold, let me explain just a little. From what I can gather it's created by a mathimatical equation or way to show chaos in material form. HUH?

If anyone has made one of these, it would be fun if you'd let me know, leave a comment or email me. I am finding this pattern a real challenge and truly enjoying the crocheting. But it's not that easily done, not by me anyway, while watching TV because of the counting. Not impossble so it's getting done as you can see. I hope it doesn't turn out huge because I would love to make more of them in better colors. I want to use the cotton crochet thread because it's always available and you don't need to worry about dye lots or getting more of it. What I'm using is some very fine sweater or shirt thread that I found at the GoodWill really cheap. I have two huge cones. I'm using a steel crochet hook #5.

Crochet the Lorenz Manifold Pattern

Has anyone every heard of the Lorenz manifold? I found it described on a web site and found it quite by mistake but it so intriguing I have to try the pattern for myself. I will try not to keep you in suspense for too long and will get some photos poste in a day or two after there's something to photograph. The pattern seem easy but what you do with the pattern after you're done with the crochet part doesn't look so easy. You'll see when I get that far what I mean and when I find the web site again, I can post that for you too. I printed out the instructions without thinking about saving the site! I know not a good idea. I love to crochet and I love puzzles, so this pattern should be a lot of fun. The pattern calls for a B crochet hook and 4 ply mercerized cotton yarn.

Knit Crochet Survey Findings

I almost forgot to mention the outcome of the survey. Crocheting wins but not by much. It seems most of the people viewing my blog and taking the survey like to crochet more than knit. That's really good to know so I will try to focus on crocheting and not just knitting. I personally, love them both equally. Crochet came out with 52% and knit came out with 47% so it really was close.

Watch for and/or come back to see post for April. I have a delightful pattern, crochet, for baby for the month of April. I have so many ideas. Spring reminds me of life. Flowers bloom, trees begin to bud. All new life just like little babies. But Spring also brings to mind April showers for those flowers! I also think of bunnies, eggs and Easter so let's see what I can come up with. The pattern will be free, too.

Thank you to everyone that voted! It really helped me a lot in knowing what you wanted to see on my blog.

Finished Knit Fish Hat ~ Dead Fish

KNIT DEAD FISH HAT
I finally finished! I seem to procrastinate when it comes to finishing but he's all done. What do you think of this pattern or this choice of yarns? Think I metioned in my last post that I used my scrap Red Heart 4 ply worsted weight yarns. Let me know if you try making one and what yarn you use. OK? Thanks.

I also made a whale cat toy (get information about this free pattern) and put a bit of catnip in it. My cats love it! It used such a little bit of yarn and was so easy and quick.

Acrylic Worsted Weight Knit Fish Hat Pattern

Knit Fish Hat Pattern

Here's my knit fish hat pattern in progress. I am working on the tail fins right now using up my worseted weight yarn. You know, you actually can find yarns in your stash that go together. Afterall, you usually choose colors you like and normally they will coordinate for the most part. This fish has been a lot of fun so far and I can't wait till I'm done so I can show you the finished project. Can you believe I am using variegated yarn!? After hating the outcome last time (check it out) but look! It actually look kind of like scales. Don't you think?

More later when I can show you the finished hat!

Worseted Weight Yarn ~ Knit for Charity !

I found another really truly wonderful blog developed by Vicki, who is committed too designing and making her cat toys for her favorite charity, The Pet Refuge. It's her way of helping. Vicki gave me permission to mention her blog and post the knit whale pattern on my blog. She's a knitter, crocheter, and spinner "trying to live a simpler life in this frantic world we live in. I'm owned by 3 kitties: Solitaire, Boo, and Pooka" she says. Look for her as SimpleKnits on Ravelry, too. Thank you Vicki for the wonderful thing you do and for sharing your patterns with us.

Her blog can be found at http://simpleknits.blogspot.com/ Simple Knits is chock full of beautiful patterns Vicki has created so make sure you check out all her patterns.

Knit Whale Cat Toy Pattern

Vicki says:
I designed this pattern for charitable use (though you may knit as many toys as you like for your own cats or as gifts for other kitties). Do not sell toys made from this pattern unless all money raised from such sale is donated to your local animal shelter. If you do use this pattern to support your shelter, I'd love to hear about it.

Thank you so much Vicki!

Pooling ~ A Knit Term Using Variegated Yarn

We’ve been discussing on the Sock Knitters Yahoo list, the possibility of your variegated knit yarn pooling patterns in your work and not striping as you'd like or expected it to do. This was a completely new term to me and I had no idea what they were talking about untill I read on. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks! That’s what happened to my “Ugly Socks” shown in a previous post.

Knit Pooled Variegated Yarn Socks

They’re not ugly, they pooled! Or the yarn did. Was I relieved to know this is a common occurrence? No! Was I going to frog the socks and start over? Heck NO! I now love my socks. I can do that, I made them! Does knowing what the problem is make it ok? OK? YES! It happens.

Does that make my socks ugly or beautiful? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? I’ve gotten a few comments, which you can go back and read, from other knitters that think they’re not ugly. That was so nice to hear. I was the one that said they were ugly and no one else thought so. Makes me feel better.

Ok, enough about my ugly, not-so-ugly, or whatever socks. Have you ever heard of pooling before? I must be living on another planet because it sure was new to me and I’ve been knitting for years. I bet it’s because of the unlimited information on the Internet these days that we didn't have before. Whatever it is, I’m glad I learned about it now.

Do we even know what pooling really is? I bet there’s a lot of knitters that don’t know besides me. You can Google the word and see for yourself……..or…….check out my previous post to see my “pooled” socks. What should have bothered me more than my socks turning out two different sizes is the fact that they didn't stripe. I wanted striped socks. One thing I really hate is when it goes back and forth from stripes to pooling and then back again. Ever happen to you?

Pooling doesn’t happen only with expensive hand dyed yarns. It can and did happen to me using manufactured acrylic blend yarn I didn’t pay a bundle for! I've made afghans and sweaters with variegated yarns in the past. I look at it this way, knitting is an exciting art and it’s a wonderful surprise when things happen. Isn’t it? This, of course, can happen to anything your knitting with any variegated yarns. Sometimes they come out as a disappointment. Maybe they start out with a lovely pooling affect you really like but then as you do the decreasing or maybe do a sleeve, things change and they can change quite a bit. And don't you just hate it when the body of a sweater pools nicely and then the sleeves look all together different?

I can hear the questions now. How can this be avoided? Let me tell you there’s a few ways mentioned in the Sock Knitters Yahoo list but there’s no guarantees. Some say to change the gauge slightly or change the knit stitch but your knitting project can start out great and it can always change in a stitch or row and start pooling. You could always tell everyone you meant to knit it up that way. You could. After all it's your artistic license and you're the designer. I don’t like taking a chance that my project will stripe, so I think I’ll stay away from variegated yarns for awhile. Doesn’t this sound like gambling?

Have you ever heard of flashing? No, not that kind. I mean in knitting. That’s just another look or pattern that pooling causes. To flash or not to flash. Is that really the question? Oh my, just learned there’s also a yarn out there that is supposed to create dots! Is that really true? Anyone.

So have we covered the perils of pooling enough? If you like it you like it; if you hate it, you hate it. If I expect to get striped socks and I don’t, I’m very disappointed and don’t like it but I’ll be darned if I’ll frog it.

Oh oh, just learned of another one! Called puddling! Is that the dots? Ok, now I know variegated yarns will not be used by me untill I learn more about using them. Who would have thought it was so complicated!? The sad thing is that we don’t usually figure all this out till we’ve knitted quite a bit.

Happy knitting!!

Ugly Knit Socks Can Make Your Feet Look Huge Because of the Patterns Variegated Yarn Creates!!

Here's my ugly knit socks I made using variegated yarn that created the pooling patterns. I mentioned a few posts ago but actually, they don't look as bad as I thought they did when made that post. To see that post and the knit socks, click on the link. They're not as ugly on my feet compared to just looking at them in the drawer! It's weird how the foot on th right looks so much better than the foot on the left. The pattern is larger so maybe that's why. And the right one is the bigger size, too. I'm still disappointed but I still love wearing them which is mostly to bed to keep my feet warm!
Any commnts? After all, they were my first pair of socks I've ever knitted. This isn't a very good photo but it's a good lookin' heel!

What Will it Be? Knit or Crochet? Free Patterns !

Here's the good ideas Tiff from Analog Buttons suggested! Thank you so much. Guess I was thinking Easter and spring instead of April showers. So now I will find a fitting pattern or design. Maybe something using a chunky yarn using large needles or maybe a knitted shawl or scarf using smaller needles and lighter weight yarn.

How about:

  • March - Crochet Shamrock Free Pattern
  • April - Showers
  • May - Flowers
  • June - Summer Solstice
I read that May 21 2008June 20-21 is a very important day for our planet and its relationship with the sun. June 20-21 is one of two solstices, days when the rays of the sun directly strike one of the two tropical latitude lines.
  • August -
  • September -
  • October -
  • November -
  • December -

Keep the ideas coming. I finally found my mismatched socks I knitted so will get a photo taken and get them posted so you can see them. The ones I posted a few days ago using the Red Heart & Sole yarn are so much prettier. The yarn I used was not supposed to automatically stripe which is pretty evident when you seen them. I still think they're ugly! Wait till you see!

Thank you for stopping by and checking out my blog. Don't forget to take my survey, join my followers and vote or me! Vote for my blog.........see the link along the right side.

Look at The Patterns You Can Crochet with Your Scrap Red Heart Worsted Yarn !

I crochet way to many afghans but this medallion afghan pattern used up a lot of my scrap of Red Heart Worsted weight yarns so I couldn't resist. This yarn is so tough and durable and the patterns you can find to make this type of afghan are everywhere. Over the years, I accummulated lots of different colors as I'm sure you have, too. To see another favorite click here to see the smartly knit childs sweater.

If you know how, the medallions can be joined together as you crochet that last row so there's no putting it all together when your done. The medallions are round but when putting them together in the last row, think of them as having four sides and you'll do fine. They're attached in two places on each side. Remember, think in terms of it being square. And then, the spaces in between the large medallions are small medallions that aren't sewn in either but you pick up stitches from each medallion around; again in two places. Really neat. Not super warm but looks wonderful on a sofa or chair!

I don't remember, I'm terribly sorry, where this particular pattern came from. I'm pretty sure it was an Annie's Attic pattern from years ago. Remember the little pattern magazine/book? There's one from Annie's Attic on their web sie but it's not free.

I edged as much as I could with black. The black gives it more of a stained glass look. And the Annie's Attic pattern doesn't put the small medallions in between. Here's the free pattern: Freepatterns.com What you have to do is click on the "link", then click on "crochet", "Afghans & Throws", "Traditional Patterns & Techniques" and you'll find the pattern in the top row far right called Arabesque Afghan. You'll have to register to get the free pattern but that's free and easy. The pattern is a pdf file and begins on page 2.

If you have any questions, let me know. It's a fun project and can almost be done with no pattern. I want to show you that you CAN create beautiful projects with acrylic yarns and you don't have to use the expensive brands. Anyway, just think of open work medallions instead of squares and you'll get that wonderful lace shawl look. Pretty, huh? Just think of the possibilities.

That brings me to another idea. When you see a pattern you love and just have to make, look closely to see just what it is about the pattern you love. If it's definitely the color, then make sure you use that color and you'll love your finished project. Most of the time we love something for it's color more than the style. Color can create a feeling, too.

Remember to leave a comment, pass my blog on to your friends, and become my follower! I also have a survey in the top right corner. Please take time to answer the few questions. I'll know what type of patterns to highlight on my blog if I know what your favorite yarns are. Thanks.
Enjoy !!

Tiff,

I'm not sure what a woobie is. I'm thinking an afghan or laprobe type blanket? This one certainly is a "take-with-you" type project until it get huge that is. But if you know how to make a medallion, you've got it made! Do you have any help there?

Thank you for commenting and joing my followers. Kathy

Tiff, I'm not sure I could help you via internet with something like the medallion afghan but you could always make block or squares instead and then sew them together.

I have been wanting to change my blog URL and name and think I should do it asap before I wait too long. What do you think? I know people do it all the time. Thanks for your help. You could email me if you'd like.

Sock it To Me! Red Heart & Sole Sock Pattern FREE

I know sometimes I'm just a little behind everyone but I must share with everyone what I found while searching on the Coats and Clark web site. I personally got on the band wagon when it came to the "knitting sock" thing awhile ago and paid $14 for a pair of socks that turned out really nice but even though I made sure the two skeins of yarn I purchased had the same dye lot, they sure don't look the same to me. A big disappointment when I paid so much and the only thing I could do was return the yarn BUT I had already spent so much time creating the first one and was halfway down the top when it was discovered. The pattern calls for 2 - 3 skeins depending on the size. Linda's prices are so reasonable, instead of $14 for a pair of socks, you can get the yarn for under $10!

Coats and Clark's Red Heart yarns has a wonderful yarn for socks. It's called Heart & Sole. So cute, huh? It's permeated with all the wonderful properties of aloe vera which helps the yarn glide smoothly on the needles and/or hook. This yarn can also be used for childrens wear, home decor and many accessories. The best thing EVER is that this yarn automatically stripes like the expensive yarns! How cool is that?!

Don't forget this yarn is available at Linda's Yarn Store at http://www.lindasyarnstore.com/ She has a big selection of Coats and Clark Heart & Sole yarns.

or Heart & Sole self-striping sock pattern
There's also a crocheted version and the pattern is link is here: http://www.knitandcrochettoday.com/episodes/pdf/KTV2005C.pdf

They look a little bulkier but sure are cute!

Please don't forget to become one of my followers, leave a comment or email me. I looking forward to chatting with everyone.

My Favorite Red Heart Yarn Project

Here's one of my favorite Red Heart Yarn projects. If anyone is interested, I can locate the pattern for you but I can guarantee you it was a free one. That's my youngest grandson who is now going on 3 years old so this was knitted a couple Christmases ago. He makes a very good model, don't you think?

There's many many wonderful patterns out there that can make your inexpensive yarns look terrific if used in a different way. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box. Someone did here with the use of just knit and purl and the combination of the two stitches. The color combination was by my design.

My next post I'm going to list my top 10 favorite Red Heart Yarns.

Great Knit and Crochet Blog Ideas ~ Knit Patterns, Crochet Patterns, Beautiful Yarn Finds ?

I just had a wonderful idea since this isn't just my blog but yours, too. Write and tell me what you would like to see here. Blogs were originally meant to be a place to socialize so please use the comment section if you'd like. Maybe you'd prefer crochet patterns over knit patterns. Maybe you'd like to know about new yarn that is coming out. Let me know.

For an update on this post, see the post Big knitting Needles or Small Knitting Needles

Anyway, I was thinking about having a different theme every month. Being it's March, maybe we can do a March Madness or St.Patty's Day pattern. I have a cute shamrock crochet pattern I will find and post it.

How about
April
May
June
July
August
September
October
November
December?

Should we have patterns or contests or something else or all of the above? I can offer free patterns to the winner and maybe round up other prizes from sponsors! This is sounding more fun all the time!

Maybe April could be "pastel ideas", May could be "sprouting ideas" as in flowers, June could be "summr's coming", July the 4th, of course, etc. etc. I you can think of anything, please let me know.

I'll start working on March right away. Come back and see what I've come up with.

New Knitting Blog on the Block ~ Knit Crochet Patten Chat

Welcome to my blog! I feel it's more like "welcome home!" You have found a place you can come and share your ideas and tips with other creative people. If you like to knit, crochet, are looking for free patterns or just want to chat. Please, take time to ready my profile and check out my favorite blogs and web sites. And please, don't hesitate to make a comment or email me with more ideas on what you would like to see here. This is OUR blog!

It is my intention to show you that knitting with inexpensive acrylic yarns can be just as beautiful as knitting with the expensive natural fibers and mixed fiber yarns. We can create beautiful items we can be proud of. Stay tuned for my ideas on doing just that.

For years I knitted with Red Heart yarn (Please visit Lindasyarnstore.com for a full range of Red Heart Yarn) and loved everything I created. The durability and vast assortment of colors and types of yarns is wonderful and with todays economy they allow us to continue our beloved hobbies of knit and crochet. It's ok if anyone wants to discuss other forms of creating. I know there's weaving and loom knitting along with some of the old and new gadgets there are to use like hairpin lace and those daisy makers. Let's all get together and keep our love of creating going dispite the economy.

Tell all your friends about this new blog you've found and invite them to join us.

Thank you for stopping by and hope you come back often.
